  • Of Connecticut’s 3,394,751, there are 210,976 children at or below the age of four.  Of those children 28,331 are living below the poverty level. 
  • There are 893,288 families living in Connecticut, and of those families 55,456 live in poverty.  There are 121,563 families living in single parent households. 
  • Total number of children under the age of six needing childcare as parents work is 149,814. 
  • There are approximately 104,106 women in the workforce with children under six. 
  • Single women in the labor force and living below poverty with children under five account for 14,276 people. 
  • The demand for childcare constitutes 43% of parents requesting infant toddler care, 36% in requesting pre-school care, and 21% requesting school-age care. 
  • The average annual fees paid for full time center care for infants is $10,959.  The average annual fee for a four year old in center based care is approximately $8,910.  The average annual cost for an infant in a licensed family home setting is $8,486 and $8,051 for a four year old in that similar setting. 
  • The cost of full time care for an infant is approximately 39% of a single parent’s median income. 
  • The Child Care Assistance Program (Care 4 Kids, administered by the United Way) serves approximately 5,700 families, which translates to approximately 9,600 children. 
  • The number of providers participating in the Child care Assistance Program is approximately 10,644.  Of these, 596 are accredited child care centers.  
  • The average income for full-time, year round child care provider is $21,970.
