The CAHS Family Economic Security (FES) Program Area works to increase the economic security of Connecticut’s low-income families and children through asset-building, financial literacy, and self-sufficiency strategies. To assist families in reaching their goals, the Family Economic Security Program Area works in many ways. For example:

  • Information- CAHS produces easy-to-read materials on such subjects as budgeting, making credit work for you, and topics of special need in low-income neighborhoods, such as why rent-to-owns are not a good deal.
  • Community Education- We assist community-based organizations and providers in educating their members and clients about strategies for being less vulnerable to wealth-stripping practices and about ways to build financial security.
  • Program Access- CAHS helps link families and communities to programs, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which bring low-income working families additional income. CAHS also works to increase opportunities for families to save for their futures through goal-related asset building.
  • Advocacy- CAHS works to support public policies that will assist low-income families in building assets and improving the quality of their lives.

  • Started in 1999, Making Connections is a ten-year investment by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to improve the outcomes for families and children in tough or isolated neighborhoods. The Casey Foundation’s research has shown that children do better when their families are strong, and families do better when they live in communities that help them to succeed.
