CAHS and Citizens Bank launch nation’s first bi-lingual financial literacy program

November 1, 2011, Bridgeport, CT – The Connecticut Association for Human Services announces that its very successful financial literacy program, The Connecticut Money School, will offer programs in Spanish as a means of promoting healthy money management in all communities. Since 2008, The Connecticut Money School has provided over 2,700 Connecticut residents education on credit, debt, homeownership and retirement issues. On average 24% of students are Spanish speaking.

The expansion of the program, La Escuela de Dinero, is made possible through a grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation and will offer free financial education courses is six areas: basic banking, budgeting, credit, home ownership, debt management, and retirement planning. Twenty bi-lingual instructors will be recruited to offer the courses throughout Connecticut, with a focus on Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford, Norwalk and Danbury.

“Financial literacy has never been more important than during the challenging times that persist in Connecticut and across the country,” said Jim Horan, Executive Director of CAHS. “With the help of the Citizens Bank Foundation, we will offer these critical courses in Spanish, and reach a wider audience to provide an increased number of families with the opportunity to be more financially stable.”

Mayor Bill Finch also shared his enthusiasm for the expansion stating, “I share in the excitement with CAHS as they embark on expanding their services in the Latino community. As the first nationally offered program of its kind, we hope other states will follow their lead.”

Initial classes in Bridgeport will be held at the Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust November 2nd and December 7th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm titled Understanding Money and Credit and will be presented entirely in Spanish. By the end of the class, students will have the ability to plan for goals, develop a budget, and understand how to use credit wisely.
